When the system calls your name—do you answer, or fight back?

From 2019-2021, Theatre in the X piloted a community play creation process, with discussion and documentation of community member stories providing building blocks for the playwright. The culmination of the process is an original play based on the words and feedback of the community. For 2026, Theater in the X developed a new play titled Acknowledge Me using the prompt of “What Now?” Four gatherings of multigenerational groups weighed in to answer the questions: “What does the nation’s 250th anniversary mean to you? What do you hope for Philadelphia’s next 250 years?” Acknowledge Me is the dramatized culmination of those discussions.

Written by Carlo Campbell
Directed by Tariq Kanu
Performed by Morgan Charace-Hall, Cynda Purnell, Charvez Grant and Abdul Sesay

Acknowledge Me: A Community Play is commissioned by ArtPhilly as part of the What Now: 2026 Festival with lead support provided by the William Penn Foundation.
